Lender M&A

Score the growth engine before you buy.

Financials tell you what a lender produced. They don’t tell you whether its growth engine will survive the acquisition.

We developed the Growth Engine Score™ to evaluate the durability of a lender’s customer acquisition engine during due diligence.

Loan officers leave. Rate cycles change. Marketing budgets shrink. Production volume can disappear faster than the financials suggest.

But a lender’s organic search presence, AI visibility, and ability to generate consumer demand represent IP that can be measured and valued.

Know what you’re buying.Understand what’s at risk. Protect what drives future growth.

Demand that doesn’t leave when people do

Owned search and AI visibility is valuable IP. If your deal team doesn’t include an SEO expert, nobody is checking it, and that miss can cost millions in the price or after the close.

Loan officers leave

Top producers take their referral partners with them. Borrowers who found the lender in search don’t follow them out the door.

The market goes out

Rate cycles wipe out refinance volume. Borrowers keep searching for purchase loans, HELOCs, and answers in every market.

Ad budgets pause

Paid leads stop the day spend stops. Owned visibility keeps working through the first budget review after close.

What the score tells your deal team

The Growth Engine Score™ rates a lender’s Growth Engine from 0 to 100, with a plain-language read on four questions the financials can’t answer.

Growth delivered today

How much of the target’s demand the website brings in on its own, and whether it’s tied to the loan products you’re buying.

Propensity for continued growth

Whether that growth is likely to keep going after close, regardless of who stays or where rates go.

What it takes to build or strengthen it

The work still needed to turn the website into a growth engine, so the cost goes into your model instead of your surprises.

Which brand should remain

Whether to keep the acquired brand, fold it into yours, or run both, based on which one borrowers search for and AI recommends.

Eight pillars, one score

The proprietary score measures eight pillars of a lender’s Growth Engine. Each one answers a question a buyer should ask before setting the price.

Scored

Demand Capture

Does the lender show up where borrowers are actively looking for a loan?

Scored

Technical SEO

Can search engines and AI crawlers reliably find, read, and trust the site?

Scored

Authority

Has the brand earned the trust that keeps it ranking, and will that trust hold?

Scored

Content Assets

Which pages actually earn traffic, leads, and links: the inventory you’re paying for?

Scored

AI Search Visibility

Do ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews mention or recommend this lender?

Scored

Brand Sentiment

What do borrowers and the web say about the brand you’re acquiring?

Scored

Momentum

Is visibility building, holding steady, or quietly eroding?

Scored

Commercial Value

Is the traffic tied to loan applications, or to readers who never apply?

Adjusted for the risks a buyer inherits

Strong pillars aren’t enough if the traffic is fragile. The pillars combine into a base score, which is then adjusted for how much of today’s demand is at risk.

Risk adjustment

What lowers the score

Traffic that looks healthy in a report but may not survive the deal.

  • Concentration: too much demand riding on too few pages or terms
  • Decline: visibility already slipping beneath the topline
  • Brand dependence: demand that only exists for people who already know the name
  • Zero-click exposure: traffic that AI answers are absorbing
Hard cap

What caps the score

Some problems outweigh everything else, so they limit the score no matter how the pillars look.

  • A search engine penalty
  • Deindexing
  • Other severe issues that put the target’s visibility in question

Common questions

What is the Growth Engine Score?

The RankWriters Growth Engine Score™ rates a lender’s Growth Engine from 0 to 100. It shows how much growth the website delivers today, the propensity for continued growth, and what it would take to build or strengthen the engine after you close.

When in the deal should we get a Growth Engine Score?

Before the offer. The score is most valuable while the price is still open, so you know whether you’re paying for a growth engine or a volume history.

How is the score calculated?

Eight pillars combine into a base score, which is then adjusted for risk. Severe problems, such as a search engine penalty or deindexing, cap the score regardless of the pillars. The weighting and data behind it are proprietary; your deal team gets the findings in plain terms, with what each one means for the deal.

Can you score a target under an NDA?

Yes. We work under your deal team’s confidentiality terms, and findings stay need-to-know.

How fast can you deliver a score?

Fast enough to fit inside a standard diligence window. Tell us your timeline when you book and we’ll scope to it.

What happens after we close?

The same expert who scored the target stays with the deal through integration, building the redirect map and migration plan before the sites are merged and tracking results through the first year.
